In Class Timed Writing
Although the industrial revolution article says that the industrial revolution brought positives, closer examination shows that there were a lot more negatives brought up from that time. one big negative that was brought up from the industrial revolution was babies being left out on the street because of the high poverty levels. another was child labor being a big thing and not giving children the ability to truly be kids causing them to grow up to fast. The industrial revolution brought lots of negatives to the people during its time.
One negative that was caused by the industrial revolution was that babies were being left out of the street. "only the poor abandon their children." (Waifs of New York City's slums 1890). Poor families did not have to money to be able to support their children so they would often abandon their children. "They come in rags, a newspaper often the only wrap, semi occasionally one in a clean slip with some evidence of loving care; a little slip of paper pinned on, perhaps, with some such message as this I once read, in a woman's trembling hand: "Take care of Johnny, for God's sake. I cannot." (Waifs of New York City's slums 1890). The people who were abandoning their child were not just doing it because they didn't want their child, some would do it because they hoped that another person could care for their child because they are unable to. Another big negative brought up because of the industrial revolution was the child labor that was happening in factories.
Childhood is being lost with so many children working in factories. "Both boys(age 15) were employed as breaker boys and going to close to the chutes fell in. Fellow workmen rushed to their assistance and soon had them out of the chutes. When taken out Mckee was found to be dead" (Lad Fell to Death in Big Coal Chute 7/19/1911). having children working in dangerous jobs will most likely cause their early death. Having children work with such dangerous conditions lowers life expectancies. "New child labor law causes a big increase in school attendance" (A Child Labor Revolution 1/14/1914). Because of how many kids were working there was not that many kids getting an education. with the new labor ways that were put in place, it forces kids under the age of 16 to go to school instead of working jobs. With the number of kids that were working jobs, it didn't let many of them enjoy their time as kids and preventing their education by not allowing them to go to school. Having kids work made them grow up to fast and prevented them from having fun as a child.

Project Reflection
- What was the greatest challenge you faced in the project and what did you do to overcome that challenge? The biggest challenge that my group faced was getting all of our recordings done and sounding really good this wasn’t that hard to do but we would mess around a lot so sometime the recording would have some background noise of laughing and we would have to rerecord.
- If you could go back and do the project again what would you do differently and why? If I were to go back and do this project again I definitely would have managed my time better because often in class I could barely edit anything and I would have to go home and do about 3 hours of editing to make of for all the time I wasted.
- What is the greatest insight you gained about the state of labor issues today? Think back through the entire project, historical context, the presentations, globalization, and your podcast production. The biggest insight that I gained was learning that my future is not secured and what I think I could do as a job may go out of existence and I will be left without options for my future.
- What are you most proud of in your project? This could be something very small and not visible to me or the audience. Help me understand why you are so proud of this piece. The thing that I am most proud of in this project is that I was able to edit a 16-minute podcast into an 11-minute podcast and still have it flow nicely, I struggled to make the podcast sort for a few days and the day before it was due I wanted to do final touches and after listening to the whole thing and being bored the whole time I decided to make it shorter and somehow I did it.
Explain 1 way you grew as a student during this project? One way I grew as a student is by seeing what I am able to do if I put some effort into what I am doing. I almost never put any of my time outside of school into anything school-related but during this project, I put in a few hours to get it done and it turned out better than I thought it would.
